A hold is put on funds, and pending authorizations. Sometimes known as card authorizations or pre- authorizations. When a customer has an attempted payment with a credit or debit card, the merchant contact’s the cardholder’s issuing bank and requests and authorization code to ensure the payment is successful. Merchants take these steps as protection against fraud, errors or other losses.
